Treatment Spotlight: Sacro-Occipital Technique
We know that the nervous system controls the functions of every tissue, organ and system in the body. Chiropractic concerns itself with the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (primarily coordinated by the nervous system) of the human body, and how that relationship affects the restoration and preservation of health.
When that relationship is compromised by a spinal bone interfering with the nervous system (a vertebral subluxation), your Chiropractor will deliver a spinal adjustment (a specific, precise, corrective force to the offending spinal segment). This correction permits normal nerve transmission, enabling the body's innate recuperative power to begin the healing process.
Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) is actually a form of spinal mobilization, but it does, in fact, use an instrument. This technique is used by chiropractors to assist in realigning the pelvis. The way it works is the chiropractor will place a wedge under the patient's pelvis and apply a little low-force pressure. This chiropractic technique was developed to restore a functional relationship between the head, the pelvis, and the spine - a structure that envelopes and protects our central nervous system.
Our central nervous system is the “control center” for our bodies and it is because of its intimate relationship to the spine and structures that surround it that makes Sacro-Occipital Technique such a profoundly effective technique. From a Spinal Mobilization perspective, the pelvis is the foundation for proper spinal alignment. Proper alignment and range of motion support nervous system integrity. However, like the rest of our body this foundation is constantly subjected to the pull of gravity and life's other strains. As a result, stability is sometimes lost, and the effects are felt throughout the body due to the distortions of the head, spine, connective tissue and nervous system.
