Written By Dr. Rinaldi on December 16, 2021

Exercise is one of the most significant ways we can increase our longevity, improve our health, and decrease our pain and suffering. Proper exercise can improve flexibility, increase strength, and even reduce back pain. Knowing the best exercises to improve your health or decrease your pain is essential to a workout plan or a pain management program.

Back exercises are almost always necessary to rehabilitate the spine and alleviate back pain. A controlled, gradual exercise program that is tailored to an individual is usually the most effective. While a typical response to back pain is to take it easy—either staying in bed or at least stopping any strenuous activity—resting for more than a day or two can actually undermine healing and worsen pain.

Muscles in the low back, abdomen, buttocks, and hips are all necessary for supporting and stabilizing the spine. Keeping these muscles active and strong can help avoid low back injury, and can minimize pain if the spine does become injured. A complete back exercise program consists of stretching and strengthening the low back, abdominal, and lower body muscles, and also includes regular aerobic conditioning. Specific exercises should be prescribed based on individual needs. The program that works best will largely depend on factors such as fitness level, specific back pain diagnosis, and personal preferences. Stiff back muscles put added strain on the vertebrae because they limit the spine's natural movements. Stretching low back and lower body muscles can alleviate tension, reduce pain, and better support the spine.
